State-of-the-art Report on use of Aluminium in Offshore
For several applications in the Offshore sector, aluminium alloys are a good replacement for many other materials such as steel. The feasibility of using aluminium for Offshore applications has been enhanced today due to new high performance alloys and products, joining technologies, surface modification methods, and reduced cost due to increased recycling.
Offshore sector in Denmark presently use very little aluminium, and most applications are dominated by steel. However, Offshore sector in many other countries for eg. Holland and Norway use high volume of aluminium for Offshore applications.
Presently Dr. Rajan Ambat, Associate Professor, IPL, DTU together with Offshore Centre, Denmark and Alucluster, Denmark is exploring the feasibility of increasing the use of aluminium in Offshore, Denmark. The aim of the project is to document various uses of aluminium in the offshore sector and related technologies, learning from others experience such Norway and Holland, and how new emerging technologies in aluminium sector could be exploited for use in Offshore.
A preliminary screening report will be published by the first week of February 2007 and a detailed State-of-the-art report with recommendations will be brought out in June 2007.
