Group 5000 (AlMg) (Topic: 10004)

The 5000-group is alloys with magnesium as the major alloying element.

Magnesium will be present in solid solution and a high content of magnesium (4ñ5%) will have a dramatic impact on strength and the resistance against deformation.

The alloys have relatively high tensile strength even in the annealed condition. The corrosion resistance is high and alloys with more than 3% Mg are often selected for use in sea-water.

The alloys are mostly used for rolled products, plate and sheet. Examples of application are small boats, LNG-tanks and offshore constructions.

Alloys with 1% Mg can be extruded at normal rates, but with higher Mg-content the extrusion speed will be very low.
