A00002.gifGroup 2000 (AlCu) (Topic: 10006)

The 2000-group contains alloys with copper as the prime hardening element. The alloys are often added magnesium to increase the natural ageing and the maximum strength.

The alloys obtain their very high strength by precipitation of the phases CuAl2 and/or CuMgAl2. The alloys are characterised by high strength, poor corrosion resistance, very low extrudability (typical extrusion speeds are as low as 1ñ6 m/min) and poor weldability.

The alloys are widely used in the aviation- and space industry and also as machine parts, bolts and rivets.
