BASIC TEMPER DESIGNATIONS FOR WROUGHT ALLOYS

F ñ As Fabricated

O ñ Annealed

H ñ Strain-hardened

W ñ Solution heat-treated

T ñ Thermally treated to stable tempers

SUBDIVISION OF H-TEMPER: STRAIN-HARDENED

Subdivisions are made according to the basic operations and the final degree of strain-hardening. The letter H is followed by at least two digits (Hxy) as follows:

The first digit (x) after H indicates the type of thermal processing.

H1y ñ Strain-hardened only

H2y ñ Strain-hardened and partially annealed

H3y ñ Strain-hardened and stabilised

H4y ñ Strain-hardened and lacquered or painted

The second digit after H indicates the degree of strain-hardening.

The second digit (y) after the letter H gives the final degree of strain-hardening. The higher the second digit, the higher the tensile strength.

Often used tempers are:

H12 H14 H18

H22 H24

SUBDIVISION OF T-TEMPER: THERMALLY TREATED

The T is always followed by one or more digits, numerals 1 through 9 indicate specific sequences of treatments:

T1 T4 T7 T42 T62

T2 T5 T8 Tx51

T3 T6 T9 Tx52
