Solution heat-treatment (Topic: 10043)
The term solution heat-treatment means heat-treatment of a metal with the
purpose to solve particles precipitated in the matrix. It is done by heating the
material to a temperature above the solution temperature of the actual particles
and soaking for a period of time.
In extrusions of
6000-alloys one is so fortunate that the alloys can be extruded at a temperature
above the solution temperature for Mg2Si, so that the extruder need only to extrude with a suitable combination of
billet temperature and extrusion speed to get a proper exit temperature on the
material.
