Using the allowable stress method the stresses calculated under maximum load are compared with the strength of the materials reduced by a given safety factor (sf).

Allowable stress method

The safety factors shall take into account all uncertainties related to the unavoidable imperfections which come into consideration when analysing actual structures including evaluation of loads, determination of strength and fabrication tolerances.
