


Strength of material (Topic: 12006)
The strength of a material is determined by a tension test, which is measuring
the tension force and the deformation of the test specimen. The tension force
is transferred to tension stress. Stress versus relative deformation gives the
characteristic curve. The stress which gives a permanent deformation of 0,2% is
called yield strength (Rp0,2) and the stress which gives rupture is called ultimate strength (Rm). The range of the characteristic curve up to the yield strength is called
the elastic range. Beyond this point we have the plastic range, the gradient of the curve in the elastic range is called the Young's modulus of elasticity. Mathematically this is stated in Hooke's law:
