An uniform torque (torsion moment) in a member where the ends are restrained only against twist, will be resisted by shear stress in the section.

The value of the shear stress created is not always a simple function of the shape and, particularly in open shapes. It is markedly influenced by reentrants and the radii of root fillets.

A member subjected to direct torque ought to be of a closed or compact shape.
