A00068.gifStability check (Topic: 12028)

Structural members exposed to bending and/or pressure can be unstable and buckle. The bearing capacity of such members can be markedly reduced.

In the codes and regulations of different countries this reduction of capacity or of allowable stresses can be calculated.

Typical members which will get reduced capacity because of stability problems are:

- Free standing columns or at least free in one direction

- Compression members in truss

- Beams where the compression flange is free to buckle
