A00068.gifStress check (Topic: 12029)

In heavy loaded structures and in structures with no deflection criteria or stability problem, the maximum stress in a member can be critical and must be checked.

Under combination of loads the actual stress must be calculated according to the formula given for combined stresses in Basic structural mechanics.

The maximum allowable stress must be calculated according to the national codes or regulations.

Structures which can get high stresses are:

- Short and heavy loaded columns

- Columns which are fixed against buckling

- Heavy loaded beams with short span

- Members with no deflection requirement
