The appearance as well as the serviceability of an aluminium product depend to a great extent on the surface treatments which precede the actual finish. Mechanical treatments may be employed for a variety of purposes:

- to eliminate scratches

- to provide a smooth or lustrous surface

- to prepare rough surfaces

- to prepare sophisticated surfaces

To achieve this mechanical surface treatment various grinding, polishing, and blasting operations may be used.
