- To secure a safe escape for the people inside the building.

- To secure as much as possible of the value of the building and its contents.

- To prevent fire spread to surrounding areas and buildings.

To achieve these goals the authorities have decided some requirements. These requirements are different in each country, but mainly they deal with :

- Fire escape routes

- Fire alarm systems

- Fire resistance of structures

- Fire walls

- The use of combustible materials

- Fire extinguishing systems
