The requirements to fire prevention are stated in national or regional building regulations.

The requirement are usually dependent of :

- The use of the building

- The height of the building

- The area of the building

- How the building is situated

In a building there are different requirements to :

- Main bearing structures

- Secondary bearing structures

- Floors

- Walls

- Roofs

- Staircase

- Cladding

- Roofing

For the cladding and the roofing the requirement is usually how combustible the material is. Aluminium cladding and roofing are in the group of non-combustible materials.

For the other building elements the authorities require different fire resistance. The fire resistance of passive fire protected aluminium alloy structures is described in the section "Passive fire protection of aluminium alloy structures".
