A common characteristic of these materials is that heat exposure initiates a chemical process that makes the material intumesce. It is the intumesced and porous part of the material which gives the insulation effect.

These materials can be as painting, plates, blankets or spray-on masses.

Most of the intumescent materials are classified as combustible and the density is usually high.
