Planing and shaping are similar methods. In planing the workpiece reciprocates. In shaping the tool reciprocates and the workpiece is fed perpendicular to this motion. You may use the same tool-geometry as for turning.

Planing and shaping operations are not very common for machining aluminium, mostly due to their low cutting speed. These operations are normally replaced by milling.
