In a side by side system the extrusions are mounted parallel, side by side. They can be engaged by longitudinally sliding, sideways moving or hooked together.

One advantage is that thin walled extrusions can be combined into big and light weight units. Sometimes the reason is that finishing is easier to carry out on single extrusions instead of the combined sections.
